Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

Scripture

John 7:45-53

Commentary

The temple guards were sent out to arrest Jesus but returned empty handed.  They did not arrest Him because He spoke like no one else.

The Jewish leaders respond by telling the guards how foolish they were because none of the other leaders had believed in Jesus.  The only people who followed Jesus were ignorant people who knew nothing of the law.

This was inaccurate as Nicodemus had become a follower of Jesus.  He seeks to defend Jesus by rhetorically asking if it was lawful to condemn anyone without having a trial first.  The Jewish leaders respond in typical fashion, having already made up their minds that Jesus was guilty because "prophets do not come from Galilee."
