Jesus Appears to Thomas
Scripture
John 20:24-31
Commentary
Thomas had not been with the other disciples
when Jesus appeared to them on the evening after the
resurrection, so he is reluctant to believe the news that they
tell him. But it is fair to note that the disciples didn't
believe the word of the ladies who had first seen Jesus after
His resurrection either.
Thomas makes the bold statement that he would
not believe Jesus rose from the dead unless he saw the scars on
His hands and side.
When Jesus appears a week later, He does not
criticize Thomas for his lack of faith as Jesus did so often
with His disciples in such situations. Instead Jesus
focuses on the positive that many would hear and believe without
ever have the benefit of seeing. John ties this into the
theme of his gospel and writes that he has recorded these things
so that others may hear and believe.
