Commentary
Earlier, the guards had mocked Jesus and hit him
in a similar fashion as the soldiers. The guards were
temple guards who worked for the Sanhedrin. This time, the
soldiers are Romans who had no previous problem with Jesus.
It is surprising how the hatred for Jesus was
basically universal. He was very polarizing and anyone who
didn't follow Him wanted nothing to do with Him. This
continues to this day. It is difficult to find a person
who is lukewarm towards Jesus, they either love Him or hate Him.
