Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

Scripture

John 1:43-51

Calling of the Disciples

Calling of Matthew

Commentary

The calling of Philip and Nathanael takes place in John just after the calling of Peter and Andrew.  Even though it is not recorded in the gospels, Jesus had likely already had some contact with Philip before He called him.  Philip obviously has some reason to believe that Jesus is the Messiah the Old Testament spoke of.

Nathanael believes because Jesus told him He saw him under the fig tree.  Jesus tells him that he will see greater things such as the angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man.  This is a reference to Jacob's ladder in Genesis 28.  This is possibly what Nathanael was reading when he sat under the fig tree.
