Mary Visits Elizabeth

Scripture

Luke 1:39-45

Commentary

Elizabeth's response to Mary appears to be prophetic as she is filled with the Holy Spirit.  We are given no indication that Mary has told Elizabeth her story about the angel's visit or even the fact that she was pregnant.  John the Baptist - still in Elizabeth's womb - leaps at the presence of Jesus.

Elizabeth recognizes that Mary is to the mother of the Lord, the long awaited Messiah.  It is unlikely that Elizabeth fully grasps what the Messiah will do but she recognizes that Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecy and His birth is the will of God.  Even without fully understanding of what that means, it is certainly a reason to celebration.
