Mary's Song

Scripture

Luke 1:46-53

Similar Passage

Mary Visits Elizabeth

Commentary

Mary's song is in response to her relative Elizabeth's greeting and the recognition that Mary carried the unborn Messiah in her womb.

The song itself is mainly a prayer of thanksgiving.  It does not focus on the miracle to take place other than the fact that she is pregnant and it is God's doing.  Even though the angel has spoken to her it is difficult to say if she fully grasps what is taking place.  Just like the disciples, she won't fully understand everything until after Jesus' death and resurrection.

Mary stays with Elizabeth for three months.  This would be until Elizabeth gives birth to John as we were previously told that Elizabeth was six months along in her pregnancy.
